layout & page design

Web page design has progressed considerably in the last few years, from text only to what is now almost total control over all aspects of the design and appearance. There are limitations to what is sensible to put onto a Web site; very large photographs, any sort of movie and useful sound will take an inconvenient amount of time to download until the adoption of a broadband technology becomes more widespread.

However within the conventional web page, (text and the judicious use of graphical and active elements) there are an unlimited number of possibilities. So the classic design goal of integrating function and appearance, within (compared to print technologies) the highly flexible and new structural environment of the Web page, guides the appearance and layout of each of the pages, while working in close consultation with the client.

Some of the factors that typically need to be considered are:

  • Integration with any existing material (brochures, stationary etc.)
  • Clear, intuitive navigation elements, that show clearly the available links and give the visitor a strong sense of their location within the site
  • A site-wide coherence to the design that can cope with all the content that needs to be displayed
  • An clear understanding of what the visitors will want from the site
