Animation can be an amusing and eye catching addition to a website, but should perhaps be used sparingly, to avoid distracting the visitor from the main function of the site (usually some form of information exchange). When bandwidth increases substantially, all moving image formats will come much more into their own, until then animation will be useful but limited in real value. There are not many sites that have to have an animation to aid functionality.
